25 May 2006 - Wanted!! - A Volunteer Just Like You
The unique posters, featuring real Three Rivers volunteers, have been specially designed for Three Rivers Volunteer Centre by freelance designer Peter Tish as part of the Year of the Volunteer campaign.
Our special thanks go to Callum Judge and Janet Wheeler, two volunteers who were game for a laugh and agreed to be our models, and to photographer John Freebrey who volunteered his time and expertise to help us out.
Pictured back from left: Lynn Green, Volunteer Centre Manager, Peter Tish, freelance designer.
Front from left: Volunteers Callum Judge and Janet Wheeler.
The idea behind the posters was to do away with the fussy, stuffy old fashioned view of what volunteering is all about. Rather than just a worthy pastime for a small group of people we want to emphasise that volunteering is for everyone.
We could have used the standard national posters but decided to make them even more relevant to Three Rivers by using real volunteers and injecting a little humour.
Freelance designer Peter Tish jumped at the idea of creating the posters. After a lot of thought we opted for the tongue in cheek approach of making Reward and Wanted posters as a deliberate attempt to get away from the staid and worthy image.
The mirror posters will be used in libraries and schools etc and are designed to make people stop and think.
Callum, 17, lives in Rickmansworth and spent last summer volunteering with Rickmansworth Waterways Trust on the Grand Union Canal and at the Chiltern Open Air Museum. He is looking forward to volunteering there again this year.
'The photo shoot was interesting and fun and it has helped me with my art project. It is great to be encouraging other people to do volunteering.'
Janet, 54, lives in Sarratt and has been very involved with village life, in particular the village hall, with the Brownies and as a school governor. Currently she volunteers at Greenfields Primary School in South Oxhey.
'I am blessed in being in a position to give back something to the community and to help where my skills can be used.'
Peter said: 'We had a great time at the photo-shoot at the CVS offices, both Callum and Janet are naturals in front of the camera and were fun to work with.'
We couldn't have done this without all the support we have received from Janet, Callum, John and Peter. This is a unique poster campaign to Three Rivers and we are sure it will encourage even more people to volunteer.
The posters will go up on notice boards across Three Rivers and will be used at displays at libraries and other public places.
Funding came from Volunteering England's Action Fund which we used to promote 2005 the Year of the Volunteer.
We would be interested to know what you think of the new posters.
